Every time journaling comes up, this question unavoidable.
"Electronic journaling good or traditional journaling good?"
Honestly, this is a question without standard answer. Everyone's needs, habits, aesthetics different, applicable methods also different. Today I'll as objectively as possible discuss pros and cons of both, help you find your answer.
Advantages of Traditional Journaling
Handwriting Feeling Cannot Be Replaced
This is something electronic devices hard to replicate.
Fingers gripping pen moving on paper, that touch, that delay, that slight rustling sound when writing—many people feel this is ritual sense electronic devices can't give.
Plus when handwriting, brain and hand synchronized. Characters must be written one by one, can't copy paste, this "slow down" feeling conversely makes you more focused.
Stronger Privacy
Traditional journal is a physically existing notebook. Where you put it, only you know.
Electronic devices no matter how encrypted, some people feel uneasy. Will server be hacked? Will cloud be censored? Handwritten diary doesn't have these problems.
For people with high diary privacy requirements, this is important consideration.
More Freedom in Layout
Traditional journaling creative space almost infinite.
You can paste stickers, stick washi tapes, draw, collage, handwrite... whatever you want. Not limited by screen size, not limited by software functions.
People who can draw can turn diary notebook into artwork. This creativity is something electronic journaling hard to fully replicate.
Disadvantages of Traditional Journaling
Difficult Retrieval
This is traditional journaling's quite big pain point.
Wrote one two years diaries, want to find some specific content? Can only flip page by page. Some details after time long forgotten, even don't know where to flip.
Electronic journaling search function one click done. Type keyword, all related records come out. This point traditional journaling can't compare.
Inconvenient to Carry and Use
Going out need carry notebook, carry pen. Sticker washi tape lovers also need carry whole tool kit.
Want to change after writing, can only use correction fluid or cross out, not good looking. Pasted wrong sticker, can only tear off re-paste, won't leave trace.
Plus notebook will wear, get dirty, might be scratched by cat. After long time corners curl, affects mood.
High Backup Cost
Handwritten diary if lost, truly lost.
Electronic data can cloud backup multiple copies, local storage also can export anytime. Traditional journal to backup, only can scan or photograph, both troublesome and average image quality.
Advantages of Electronic Journaling
Write Anytime Anywhere
Pull out phone and write, this is electronic journaling's core advantage.
Waiting for bus, queuing, lunch break, before bed—any fragmented time can be utilized. Traditional journaling need pull out notebook, flip to correct page, find pen before can write. Steps多了, threshold higher.
Powerful Search Function
After writing countless diaries, electronic journaling's value manifests.
Keyword search, tag filter, browse by date—these functions make massive records manageable. Will discover your previously written things truly have value, not lying in some corner gathering dust.
Rich Templates and Tools
Electronic journaling apps generally have ready templates.
Daily, weekly, monthly, reading notes, task lists... pick template you like, directly fill content, no need design from scratch. For beginners especially friendly.
Traditional journaling needs templates, must draw yourself or print online. Time consuming effort consuming, and not necessarily handy.
Convenient to Modify and Organize
Wrote wrongly then change, no trace. Want adjust certain block position, drag once done.
Traditional journaling if pasted wrong position, either endure or redo page.
More Secure Data
Diary stored in cloud, unless actively delete yourself, basically won't lose. Change phone, tablet broken, both no effect. Traditional journaling might because of one fire, one flood all gone.
Disadvantages of Electronic Journaling
No Handwriting Feel
This is reason many people don't accept electronic journaling.
Fingers swiping on screen, completely different experience from pen moving on paper. Typing speed although fast, but lacks that "slow down" feeling.
Though for younger generation grew up with electronic products, this difference might not so obvious.
Easily Distracted
Open phone write diary, might writing writing pop up a WeChat message. Notification sounds, attention interrupted.
Traditional journaling doesn't have this problem. Paper and pen won't pop messages, can make you more focused.
This problem can be alleviated through some "focus modes," but not all apps do it well.
Screen Limitations
Phone screen only that big, no matter big tablet also can't compare to opened journal notebook.
If you like horizontal large spread layout, electronic devices hard to fully restore this experience. Though for most people, this isn't big problem.
How to Choose?
After all this, how to choose?
Simple粗暴 suggestion:
Choose traditional journaling if:
- Your handwriting good, want to display
- You pursue handwriting ritual sense
- Your diary needs high privacy
- You like collage, drawing etc. creative work
Choose electronic journaling if:
- You often out, want to record anytime
- You've written long, need convenient retrieval
- You lazy to organize stationery, hoard notebooks
- You want templates to help organize content
Both also fine.
This is my choice. Daily casual recording on phone, weekends when free use journal notebook write something deeper. Both complement, more flexible than only choosing one.
Finally
Journaling is a habit, not a tool.
Regardless using notebook or phone, as long as can make you start writing, willing to persist, is good choice.
Don't struggle too long. Pick one, try for period, discover don't like then switch.
Start writing, much more important than choosing right tool.
